IEC (Importer Exporter Code) Registration
IEC (Importer Exporter Code) Registration:
Your Gateway to Global Trade
Whether importing raw materials, components, or end-products or sending Indian products and services beyond the borders, every business in India aspiring to enter the huge world of international trade is looking for the Importer Exporter Code (IEC). It is a principal necessity and requirement for their undertaking. No IEC means no legal import or export transactions in India.
The IEC, a 10-digit alpha-numeric code for identification, is obtained from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It acts as a unique business identification number, essentially your "passport" for import and export activities. It aims to regulate and promote India's foreign trade, thereby enabling transparency and smooth transactions.
The import-export arena has always been nerve-wracking concerning all legalities and logistics, particularly for MSMEs, determined startups, and service exporters. For them, the first and foremost step becomes obtaining the IEC. We simplify that so stress is taken away from IEC registrations for a clean, compliant, and smooth entry into global markets.
What Exactly is an Importer Exporter Code (IEC)?
An IEC is a 10-digit code by which an individual or a company that engages in import-export activities is uniquely identified. It is lined to the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the applicant entity/person. The GST regime has enabled PAN as a tax identifier for many purposes, but the IEC is an independent code issued by DGFT.
- =Without IEC, no one or institution can import or export something. Service exports can be made without the IEC. However, if you need benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, the IEC is required.
A unique tag for your business internationally.
The IEC will only be issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
The IEC is linked to the PAN of the applicant.
An IEC issued is valid for a lifetime. It never requires renewal; however, its annual updating is a prerequisite so that it is considered active.
Why is IEC Registration Crucial for Your Business?
In simple terms, the IEC registration is not just a formality but unlocks avenues for your business and provides the necessary legal backing for anything your international trade business needs. Some of the main pain points to consider for businesses contemplating a global economy are:
1. Legal Mandate for Import/Export
- Problem: Your goods may get caught on hold by customs without the required permits, incurring heavy penalties and losses.
- Solution: The IEC is required by law. It enables the import and export of all goods and services to/from India in the name of your company, ensuring smooth clearance at customs and preventing loss due to delays.
2. Access to Global Markets
- Problem: Without IEC, your business's reach is limited to being local market with scant chances of growth.
- Solution: IEC opens up your business channel to the global market. It enables your business to trade internationally with both customers and suppliers and increase your client base worldwide.
3. Facilitating Customs Clearance
- Problem: IManual customs clearance procedures will take some time and legal identification becomes essential.
- Solution: The IEC eases customs clearance via a universally recognized identification number applicable to all imports and exports, thereby expediting documentation and inspection.
4. Enabling Banking Transactions
- Problem: Making trade-related payments to any foreign bank involves a lot of stipulations regarding identification.
- Solution: All banks require IEC before accepting foreign remittances for payments concerning imports and for receipt of payments for exports. IEC eases most compliance hassles for the financial transaction.
5.Eligibility for Schemes & Benefits under Government
- Problem: The government offers many incentives to promote export businesses.
- Solution: An IEC holder can avail of numerous benefits and incentives offered by the DGFT and the Government for promoting export, such as Duty Drawback schemes, Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS), Service Exports from India Scheme (SEIS), now replaced by RoDTEP/RoSCTL; and GST benefits, like exporting without paying IGST under LUT or claiming GST refunds.
6. Lifetime Validity with Minimum Compliance
- Problem: With many licences, updating them to maintain validity is a hassle.
- Solution: The IEC remains valid throughout the entire life of an establishment. Generally, it needs no elaborate annual filing or renewal, making it one of the most trouble-free registrations in India today. (Note: While valid for the lifetime, an annual online update of IEC is mandatory between April and June every year to avoid deactivation, even if there are no changes in details.)
7. Enhanced Trustworthiness of the Business
- Problem: The absence of formal identification can erode trust with international partners.
- Solution: Having an IEC enhances the credibility of your business in the eyes of international clients, suppliers, and financial institutions. It communicates that your business is legally recognized and serious about engaging in international trade.
